Do you know if they were identical twins? Could make a difference a doctor would tell you more.

It is my understanding that fraternal twins do tend to run in families, but identical twins are purely random events.  My husband's great grand father was an identical twin and my daughter has fraternal twins.  But in order to run in families you should see a lot of them, especially as you look at your great aunts descendants.  Otherwise they are random, and it is my understanding that they are also more common with older mothers.

When I unexpectedly had fraternal female twins 28 years ago, people asked me if it ran in the family. My answer at that time was "it does now". Since doing genealogy, I realized that it DOES run in my family. Identical twins do not, but having fraternal twins is governed by the female line and whether she releases two eggs during ovulation. Practically every single female descendant of my maternal great-great-grandmother had twins. My sisters did not, but I guess I was the lucky one. Now to see if my daughters have twins!

I'm not a scientist but today I spoke to an ex colleague, a high school science teacher who informed me as follows on this issue:- 

1.  Until recently the thinking was that twins would occur when there were previous generations of twin births and that is what the science teachers in the UK used to teach.   
2.  However, the thinking has changed and twin births are now thought to be more random.
3.  Having said that, there is the phenomenon where some women could be predisposed to releasing 2 eggs giving rise to twins.
4.  But the main issues are (i) the data doesn't go back far enough; (ii) lack of statistical measurement & (iii) oral histories all leading to insecure data analysis.  Hence the change in thinking as set out at 2 above.  

On the subject of oral history, I discovered via Jewish Gen databases that my paternal grandmother was a twin.  She had several children but no twins and neither have I had twins.  

There may be genners 'out there' with more scientific knowledge but in the meantime I hope the above may be of some use to you.

My father, who was born in Krynki, Poland in 1898, was one of identical twins but his twin died of (probably) typhus within his first year of life but there are no other twins in our extended family in his or my generation nor had there been any reference to any other set of twins in his previous generation, so, i would guess, you don't need to expect twins in your generation unless by accident...

I agree with Malka about the lack of statistical measurement of twins.  As a practical example, in the 1910's in NYC my late Uncle Irving was born a twin.  The two boys' birth certificates give no indication of whether they were fraternal or identical.  My Uncle's twin passed on in very early childhood.

Past records may be too imprecise to use for study, but I would think going forward data would be recorded and studied accurately.
