"Shaia" is typically short for Yishayah (Isaiah), but "Shea" more commonly is short for Yehoshua (Joshua).
Correctly matching nicknames and diminutives with the proper full name is a very significant issue in the Halachot (Jewish laws) of marriage and divorce, and many rabbis over the centuries have written treatises on the subject of nicknames. In my wife's Fin/Finn family from Ushpol, Lithuania it was spelled "Shaya" typically and "Shaia" occasionally. The Hebrew name from which it was derived was Yeshayahu.

In our family, which lived in Also-Orlich, Austria-Hungary (pre Trianon Treaty), my grandfather Shaiya was short for Yeshaiyahu or Isaiah. On his birth record from Nyiregyhaza, he was Samu, and after he immigrated to the US he was Charles. Other cousins named after the patriarch were named Saja on BMD documents during the Austria-Hungary era. The point being, there are many diminutives of Yeshaiyahu in our family which translate to Isaiah and Anglicized to Charles.

I have a Shia in my family (Lithuanian), only Shia was his actual, "official" name, not a diminutive or nickname. Would it be a common practice to name a child Shia after a relative who had passed away who had been named Yehoshua? For that matter, was it a common practice to name a child Shia, rather than naming them Yehoshua and just calling them the diminutive?
