Free Sunday meeting: Cohen de Azevedo - Tracing a Sephardic Family #events #sephardic

Cohen de Azevedo - Tracing a Sephardic Family

The Azevedo family of Lisbon became the Cohen de Azevedo family in
Amsterdam. Active in the Portuguese-Jewish community, they first involved
themselves as intermediaries in freeing Christian slaves in Muslim
countries. Later they emerged as a prominent rabbinic family, providing
Hahamim (rabbis) in both Amsterdam and London. Later generations of family
members emigrated to the Americas. The meeting will also discuss
complications in the 17th century Cohen de Azevedo family tree.

Ton Tielen and David Mendoza will present the history of this significant
Western Sephardic family. Ton and David are founders of the Sephardic
Genealogical Society, and co-admins of The Sephardic Diaspora group on

Tina Isaacs

My great-great-grandfather, Abraham Isaacs (1838-1910) married Louisa Cohen d'Azevedo (1844-1889) in London's Great Synagogue on 24 April 1863.  The marriage certificate lists Louisa's father's name as Joseph Cohen d'Azevedo.  Their son, Emanuel, emigrated to the US, where my grandfather Harold was born.  I grew up in the US, but moved to London in 1994.  I hope to join the Zoom conversation this evening.
