Can anyone tell me about the Hebrew name Gemaliel/Gamaliel)? Is this name of German origin? What is their English equivalent?

After much research, I believe that my three times great grandmother, Kitty (Catherine) VAN MILLINGEN (c1790-1835), wife of Joseph, was the daughter of David Coleman SOLOMONS (c1742-1809), son of Coleman SOLOMONS whose Hebrew name was Kalman son of Gemaliel or Gamaliel.

Hambro Synagogue burial register (Synagogue Scribes) shows that Kitty MILLINGEN, wife of Joseph, was the daughter of David (Hebrew: Mr Dov). Other civil records show her father's surname as SOLOMONS or SOLOMON.

Thank you for your help in this matter.

My brother's second given Hebrew name is Gamaliel, civil name George.

This is a Biblical name.  It is found many times in the Book of Numbers (fourth book of the Five Books of Moses).  The first reference is in chapter 1, verse 10, occurring during the listing of the names of the leaders of the tribes.  The leader of the tribe of Menasheh was Gamliel, son of Pedatzur.

Note the correct pronunciation:  gam-LEE-el or gam-LEE-ayl.  There is no 'ah' sound after the 'm'.

The meaning of the name is "G-d has rewarded me".

Gamaliel is a name born by several prominent rabbis during the Roman period, First-Fourth centuries, and is thus certainly not of Germanic origin.  One of them is mentioned in the Book of Acts in the New Testament.

The Hebrew roots are GML, which means either ripen or reward, and "El," one of the names Jews use for G-d.

As a side note, one of the United States' most scandal-ridden
presidents, Warren Harding, was given Gamaliel as a middle name. He was
of Dutch-British ancestry, with no apparent Jewish DNA.

Dov is not David. Dov (sometimes called Dov Ber) is a different name. It appears in Yiddish with the diminutive Berel, in English as Bernard or Barney (very occasionally as Benjamin), and in Russian as Berko.
