I currently keep my updated tree and most of my records on Ancentry.  What are recommended ways of keeping this information on my computer?  Looking for software that would allow me to upload a gedcom file.

Family Tree Maker (2019 latest version) will allow you to sync your tree on Ancestry down to your computer, then you can make updates either on your computer and/or online and keep them in sync.  It will also allow you to load in a gedcom with a different tree name and if you wish sync it on line up to Ancestry.

I'm using RootsMagic for these purposes. In addition to syncing with Ancestry (both ways), it also compares profiles with MyHeritage and Familysearch and alerts you to possible matches. There's a free version which is not bad and a paid version ($40 IIRC) which has some additional features. Check out the differences on their site.

Hi  I have used Legacy for the past 8/10 years and found it holds everything you need. The version I have is the free software but you can add additional data at a small charge. I uploaded my Gedcom file and have used My Heritage and Ancestry to upload on to their website plus you don't have to worry about other people changing your tree information as my Legacy programme cannot be altered by anybody else as it's on your computer/laptop and is therefore a master copy.

I use GRAMPS https://gramps-project.org/blog/ , which is free and open source

Diane,

It definitely is a good idea to put your tree somewhere other than just on Ancestry. First, one day you may not want to continue your subscription. Second, if something to happen to you, how would your family be able to get your tree???

I also use FTM, which syncs with both Ancestry and FamilySearch. And make sure you regularly download a copy of that gedcom file onto your computer, as a separate process. Any time I make changes to a tree, I download a new gedcom file onto my hard drive.

However, I do also want to encourage you to download all your documents (birth, marriage, death certs, ship manifests, naturalization papers, passports, etc, etc, etc) onto your computer or external hard drive. And then create a consistent naming system, so when you're looking for, say, Isaac LEVINE's ship manifest, you can quickly and easily do so, which might look like this: LEVINE_Isaac - 1903 Ship Manifest.
For instance, I have a separate folder for each SURNAME. Then, within that SURNAME folder, I have various sub-folders, such as Immigration, Birth, Death, Gravestone photos, Photographs, etc, etc.

This is part of what we teach people in our JewishGen Virtual Conversations who want to learn (or improve) genealogy organization and planning. https://www.jewishgen.org/Education/edu-virtual.html

I never fail to be staggered by the arrogance and naivety of these things. No doubt all those people will love having their ancestors baptised, and being placed at risk of being killed (without consent).

Upload away.

Hi all,
I tried to download the Rootsmagic app and although I finally managed that, I can’t, for the life of me fathom how to use it.
Due to my vision impairment, I don’t use a computer. I just use my iPad, but as you seem to have to plug into a computer, it will be a waste of time for me.
Anyone else have this problem?
Cheers

Yes, great advice.  I'd go one step further. Regularly backup your data on a thumb drive or external hard drive to make sure you always have at least two current copies in case your hard drive crashes or there is some other data disaster.

Of all the genealogy software packages and iterations I’ve tried over the years, my preference still goes to Brother’s Keeper 7

I use Brother's Kepper 7 as my master local database and geni.com as most most-up-to-date online source - a manual process. I use Family Tree Maker to backup my Ancestry.com tree and for merging duplicates. I used Family Tree Builder to backup my MyHeritage tree and for lopping off sections too disconnected from the lines I manage.

Doug and All,

For the iPad, try MobileFamilyTree.  The companion Mac program MacFamilyTree is my current desktop software, and they sync with each other but you can buy one or the other or both.  I moved to this software after 15 years of using Rootsmagic and love it.
