Help identifying a military uniform #slovakia #hungary #subcarpathia

Judy Cooperman

I have a photo of my grandfather in a military uniform. He is from Munkacs so this uniform could be connected to Hungary, Subcarpathia, or Czechoslovakia. This would be sometime between approximately 1918-1944.

I would appreciate help in identifying what army or war it relates to.

If you have any other information relating to my grandfather Ferencz Roth please let me know.

Thank you

Judy, this uniform appears to be a WW1 uniform from the U.S. However, to make a positive uniform identification,  it is always advisable to post the entire photograph rather than a cropped version so that we can see his head and whether he has a  military cap on. It's also important to post the image so that we can see his shoulder boards and so it can be enlarged to examine those and other details.

Points to note here are:
1. There are epaulettes (those folds of cloth) on the shoulder.  This means that the uniform is not Hungarian. It is most probably Czechoslovakian because the uniforms of the newly-formed Czechoslovakian army were based on the uniforms of the allies - especially Britain.
2. The regiment number on the collar.  Very unusual.
3. I agree that it would have been preferable to have the photograph showing the headgear, if any, and the boots.

It looks like he might be holding his cap in his hand? Also appears to be pockets stitched to the surface of the coat on the side bottom.

Hi Judy,
Munkach , today Mukachecvo , was part of Czechoslovakia and later Hungary.
Try to contact Mr. Baruch Huber, he is a local researcher from Ungvár. I believe he can help you also with additional research.
His email is huberbelay@...

Good luck
