Herman LICHTENSTEIN born 1896 - no record before 1921 #usa
Paul Silverstone
In 1942 on his WWII draft registration card Herman Lichtenstein (or Lichenstein) gave his birth date as Aug 23, 1896 in New York City. In 1921 he married Lilyan Haber, and this is the earliest record I can find for him. I have searched the census records 1900-1920, and also cannot find a WWI draft registration or a record of birth in NY for 1896. Maybe the family name was different before 1921. He regularly appears on other records after his marriage. What am I missing?

Men named Herman often show up on earlier records as Hyman. This may be his birth record on FamilySearch.org, despite the difference in date. (His parents' names are similar to what's on his marriage record, also transcribed on FamilySearch -- Harris Lichtenstein, Eva Breslon.)
You might want to order both records through the Family History Library's free search service, to interpret handwriting for yourself and to see if they include additional information. Also see Hyman Lichtenstein with parents Harris and Eva on the 1900, 1910, and 1915 censuses. on stevemorse.org. If you find it you can order the actual birth certificate from the Municipal Archives 31 Chambers Street in lower Manhattan. Diane Jacobs

Hi Paul, what sources have you already used to look?
Also may I ask where your Lichtenstein relative originates in Europe? My closest Lichtenstein relative is from northeastern Slovakia -- she is my great-uncle's wife, but she is also a cousin as they were cousins when married. Todd Edelman Davis, CA, USA

Paul,
To add to what others have found for you, here is a transcript from Ancestry of his birth record. Notice the slightly different transcription of his mom's maiden name from that on the FamilySearch birth transcription.
Good luck in your search,
Sherri Bobish
