How to find divorce records in NYC or VA #usa #records

My father married his second wife in VA but lived with her in NYC. They divorced fairly soon after being married. Any assistance in where to find documentation of their divorce? VA or NYC? I am on Ancestry but can't seem to find anything.

Thank you.

A recent presentation on NYC records explained that divorce records are a court matter, therefore you won't find them amongst the popular website collections from the Health or Clerk's Departments.

I tried in 2008 to get a copy of divorce papers for my late husband's maternal grandparents who were married in 1910 and divorced in New York in 1943. I was told by the court clerk that the only way I could get those papers was to either have both individuals okay it. I told him that wasn't going to happen because they are both deceased. He then said I would have to wait one hundred years from the time of the divorce because divorce records in New York City are sealed for that period of time. I was though able to get a copy of the index cards with some necessary information on them.

Did you try Ancestry? I found divorce records from the 1970's on the site.

The Ancestry.com catalog states that it has Virginia divorce record 1918-2014 and Bronx County, NY, divorce records 1914-1995.  The FamilySearch.org catalog states that it has Virginia divorce records 1918-1988.  I am not sure about NYC.

The "Bronx County, New York, U.S., Divorce and Civil Case Records, 1914-1995" database on Ancestry.com includes pages indexing court cases. While this can be helpful, the database and images do not include the contents of the actual case files. As Ina Getzoff noted, these are not public files and are closed for 100 years. So, if a case was heard before 1922, it's file might be available upon request at the appropriate Bronx court. This index interesting in that it also includes indexed civil cases for legal determinations of insanity. If you had a relative committed to an institution in a Bronx court during that time period, the case may be listed. It also includes civil cases that arose due to business transactions.
