Index files - ODESSA #ukraine

It has just come to my attention that Alex Krakovsky has in the last few days posted scans of true index files from Odessa rabbinate - births 1908, 1911-1920, Marriage 1918-19, deaths 1919

These are in cursive Cyrillic contemporaneously written with the records and of course not digitally searchable - but index scans online nonetheless.   Up to now the only true contemporaneous index files for Ukraine I am aware of are Kyiv and Zhitomir -

If you are persistent this can be used even if you cannot read Russian.  If you use the Steve Morse pages to convert a name in English to cursive Cyrillic you can then compare that to the index files…..

I went through the birth records and I could only search 1911 - 1914. If you tried going before or after, it said "page not found." Also, if you look through this, the records are arranged in English alphabetical order rather than Russian alphabetical order (for example: I was looking for my grandmother, whose last name was FAVILYUKIS. In the Russian/Cyrillic alphabet, the F (looks like the letter phi in Greek) comes after U. I found all the F records after E). If some months are missing, you'll have to go through to where the letter would be in Russian alphabetical order (I think in 1912, the records for January and February were elsewhere). Records (at least the birth records I looked at) are arranged first by first letter of the last name, then by month, and then (usually) by day of the month, though not all records gave the day of the month).

I couldn't find the birth record for my grandmother. Is it possible these records are incomplete - maybe some have been lost? Also, is it possible that not all births were recorded by the rabbinate? Odessa was pretty big even then. Is it possible there was more than one Rabbinate?

Hi everybody,

The Ukraine SIG has a lot of Odessa Indexes already recovered and in translation.

Birth indexes from 1878 to 1900 have already been translated and should be available for search on the Ukraine JewishGen Database since 2016.
Marriage records are now in translation but it's going very slow as I have only one translator working on it.

Needless is to say that if you are able to read handwritten Russian and have some spare time, I would be glad to give you some documents to translate (please contact me privately).

Thanks,

The 1908 Odessa births are visible in the index posted at

but some haven't been uploaded yet. As Alyssa wrote, the order in which the names appear is strange. Some of it looks like English alphabetical order, but not throughout. For 1908 there are no birthdates but the records for each letter are arranged by month, and sometimes the months don't appear consecutively but are in separate parts of the PDF file. That accounts for duplicates when we list the initial letters in the order in which they appear.

For 1908, the order is neither purely English nor purely Russian, even if we delete duplicate letters:
А Б В Б Д Ф Х Г Д Г Ж Г И К Я Е Ю К М Л М Н О П Р С Р С Ш Щ Ш Е Т У Ц Ч В Г Х З И
(A B V B D F Kh G D G Zh G I K Ya E Yu K M L M N O P R S R S Sh Shch Sh E T U Ts Ch V G Kh Z I)
