JewishGen Discussion Group #JewishGen Re: mezuza on angle #general

The compromise between vertical and horizontal is one explanation for the
angle of the mezuzah. There is another explanation. Some say that the
mezuzah was placed vertically until the Crusades in Europe, when hostile
locals started painting crossbars on peoples' mezuzahs to form a cross. To
thwart this, mezuzahs were placed at an angle. This was not done in Islamic
countries. In Israel today, some have used this explanation to resume
placing their mezuzahs vertically, since they have no concern that anyone
will desecrate them.
