I descend from a famous centenarian, Lazarus (Eleazar) Finkelstein of Mariampol, who was 109 when he died in Chicago in 1918. Many newspaper stories about him, but NOTHING in any Census. Yet I believe he came to the US in the 1880s, so I can't think whey there would not be some listing. Any ideas?

Have you looked for Lazarus (Eleazar) Finkelstein in old city directories?

Is there an address of last residence on his death cert?  You can find that address on the 1910 federal census, and hope that he lived there in 1910.

Did he live with a son or daughter or other relative that you can look for in the census?

A lot of Finkelsteins from Suwalki gubernia (of which Mariampole is part) went to Sheffield, UK, and elsewhere in N.England in the 1860s/1870s. Some changed their name to Stone. My Guttenberg (later Graham) family from Sheffield's family lawyer was Harris Finkelstein later Stone.
