Looking for Herman/Hyman Wayler on ships manifest #general #lithuania
Debbie Fleischhacker Wayler
Hi
I am looking for information about my husband's grandfather Hyman/Herman Wayler born June 16, 1883 in Kaunas (Kovno). According to his naturalization papers he immigrated on the ship Barcelona originating from Hamburg arriving in the US on Feb 2 (5), 1903. I can not find his name on the ship's manifest. He had no other relatives in the US. We are wondering if he changed his last name. thank you so much Debbie Wayler Boston, MA

Is it possible that he used another name before emigrating to America? Have you tried using a soundex to capture alternate spellings? Another possibility is to search through the manifest using age and place of origin rather than his name, in case he did change his last name. Best wishes!

Debbie, Unless Herman's nat papers have attached to it a certificate that the manifest has been found (this is not done on earlier naturalizations) than I suggest you assume that the ship name and/or the date of arrival is in error. Also, do not limit your search for a manifest to NY. He may have arrived at another port (even through Canada.) My grandfather and all his siblings arrived in NY in 1892. I have the passenger manifest. On their naturalization papers only one of them got the ship name correctly. One listed a name of a ship that hadn't even been built yet in 1892. Have you searched for surname Wayler in records from Kovna (Kaunas)? https://www.jewishgen.org/databases/Lithuania/ A quick search at the above site (using soundex search for the surname) finds variants such as: WELLER, VELER, FELER, etc. Regards, Sherri Bobish

Barbara - what search resources would you recommend? I am having a similar issue with finding a relative's manifest. I have looked at Ancestry and Family Search. I tried Steven Morse, but it doesn't link properly. I would like to try searching using different fields as you suggest. ~Donna Borok Moss

Using your findings I located him on the Ancestry's NY arrival as Metel Waler and on the detained aliens list as Motel Weiler. David Rosen Boston, MA

Donna,
I would have suggested Steve Morse's pages. Can you search Ancestry and Family Search with wildcards? BTW, I think Mr. Morse has a link to report problems, so you may want to let him know about the problem you are experiencing. -- Barbara Sloan Conway, SC

Barbara, SteveMorse's search pages are the gold standard for flexible name searching. Ancestry has a good soundex search capability on both first names and surnames. On FamilySearch if you do not tick the "exact" box than it does a more flexible search, however in my opinion the Ancestry soundex search is better. Regards, Sherri Bobish
