Louis ZAROW (aka Leib TSAROVSKY) of Winnipeg (1888-1959) #canada

Hello,

I am looking for descendants of Louis ZAROW (born Leib TSAROVSKY) of Winnipeg. Louis/Leib was born ca1888 in Borshchagovka, in the Kiev region, and died in Winnipeg in 1959. Louis and his wife, Sarah (nee WEISBERG), arrived in Winnipeg in 1921.

In November, 1923 Louis and his family were unsuccessful in their attempt to leave Canada and immigrate to the United States, where they had planned to join cousin Philip (Fawel) ZITOMERSKY in Brooklyn. Philip was an older brother of my great-grandfather. Philip's mother was Nechoma TSAROVSKY. Leib ZAROW's father was Moshe-Reuvin TSAROVSKY. I believe that Nechoma TSAROVSKY and Moshe-Ruvin TSAROVSKY were siblings, and that their father was named Yankel TSAROVSKY

If anyone knows a Zarow descendant from Winnipeg, please pass this message on to them and ask that they please contact me.

Thank you,
Ben Zitomer

I do not have information on your family, but I am a descendant of ZAROWSKY/ZAROW - My great grandfather was Isidor Zarowsky (became Zarow), son of Nathan.  He was born in 1881.   Here is the information from his ship record.    name Itzko Ruwin Zarowski. Says from Brasilow.   Wife was Wittia Zarowsky in Brasilow Kiev Russia.  He was going to Galveston, TX.  Going to friend H. Schlesinger in Lincoln, NE.  (Contradictory but this is how it was listed on ship record.)  He was 5’2” with green eyes and brown hair with a fair complexion.  Born in Brusilow.  It looks like he was a trader.  Arrived March 1910.

Have you done DNA testing?

These 2 last names only seem similar due to their transliteration and the eventual shortening. The original name in the first post is Tsarovsky, while the original name in the 2nd post is Zharovsky, which was transliterated in Germany (or wherever the ticket to the US was purchased) as Zarowsky.  This is likely how original Zhitomirsky was changed to Zitomersky.

In general, Zharovskys lived in Chernobyl, by the end of the 19th century some of them moved to Khabno (more recently called Poliske) or outside of the Radomysl uezd.

Ben,
Have you found your Tsarovsky family in the 1897 census of Borshchagovka?

Mike,

Thank you for your reply. Yes, I have found the Tsarovsky (Zarow) family in the 1897 Borshchagovka census, file DAKO 384-10-84 page 19. The family was originally from Ruzhin.
