I'm wondering if there are any records bearing on Jewish migration from Galicia to Austria (especially Vienna) during the First World War, when control of Galicia traded hands between the Austrian Empire and the Russian Empire. Did the Viennese police, say, require migrants to register?

I'm very interested in this too as my mother's birth family migrated from Drohobych to Vienna in late 1914 when the Cossacks invaded Drohobych. Her parents were somehow separated on the journey so my grandmother arrived in Vienna alone with four children and pregnant with my mother, she had to put the older four in the Jewish orphanage and my mother was fostered from her birth in Vienna.

EVERY resident of Vienna had & still has to register with the police. The documents are called Meldezettel. The LDS Family History Library has a large collection. They are indexed by a sort of soundex & there's a learning curve to using them. Auskunft aus historischen Meldeunterlagen - Antrag contains information on those dating 1904-1975 held by this archive; use a browser translation plug-in.

This is not quite what was asked, but it might be of interest to know that the Holland American Line sold package deals for transport from Europe to America consisting of rail tickets to Rotterdam, steamship passage to the US, and rail tickets in the US to the final destination. I noticed a few of my relatives living in Galicia purchased tickets from Vienna to Rotterdam to New York. This came as a surprise to me because Vienna seemed out of the way. It makes me wonder if they wanted to visit unknown-to-me relatives in Vienna. (Google Holland America Line ticket registers to find the website of the archives in Rotterdam where you can search online for free.)

Use the FamilySearch catalog to find the collections of Jewish records in Vienna on Family Search:
