Notation on ship's mamifest #records

Steve Pickoltz

My family arrived in the USA on May 9, 1890 in NYC, aboard the SS Russia.  The part of the family I am questioning is BERNSTEIN, which consisted of Bluma, wife (line 203); David, son, 11 mths (line 205); and Hersch, son, 9 (line 204).

On the line for Hersch it states --- HOSPITAL.  What would that be refering too and where could I get info on it????

My problem besides the above is the fact that after they arrived in May, that is the last mention of David.  Did he die, where is he?  He just vanished.  Hersch is my grandfather.  Therefore,  I am wondering if the notation was written for the wrong child.

Regardless, what does that notation mean, and if he died, where is the body buried?

Open to all suggestions.

The notation you mention was made when the immigrant exhibited some medical or physical condition that the authorities wanted to screen for & the immigrant was held for observation.  Starting around 1903, additional details were added -- for example, my great-grandmother arrived in 1911 and in addition to "hospital" it states "conjunctivitis".

If a passenger had died, an entry would have been made in the "Date and cause of death" column, immediately to the left of where "hospital" was recorded.

There are no additional records available regarding hospitalizations of passengers except for those hospitalized at Philadelphia ca. 1882 to ca. 1902; those records are at NARA, Philadelphia.

Have you found the family in the 1900 or 1910 census? In columns 11 & 12 (1900) and in columns 10 &11 (1910) is asked "Mother of how many children".  "Number? " and "How many Living"  If David did not survive it will show up here.
