On Wednesday, October 12, JGCPBC will present “The Untold Story of America’s Efforts to Save the Jews of Europe” hosted by Dr. Rebecca Erbelding.

Rebecca Erbelding, a contributing historian to the Ken Burns documentary “The US and the Holocaust”, will bring to life the efforts to save thousands of Jews in Nazi-occupied Europe- after millions had perished.  Dr. Erbelding earned her PhD in American history from George Mason University. Her book, Rescue Board: The Untold Story of America’s Efforts to Save the Jews of Europe and winner of the National Jewish Book Award, is the study of the War Refugee Board, created by FDR in January 1944 to save the lives of Jews and other persecuted minorities during the Holocaust. She worked as an archivist and curator at the US Holocaust Memorial Museum and has been a historian for the Museum’s exhibition, Americans and the Holocaust.  Her work has previously been featured in the New York Times, the New Yorker, the History Channel and National Geographic.

For more than a decade, Congressional immigration policy kept most Jewish refugees out of America, even as Hitler and the Nazis closed in. In 1944, the United States finally acted. That year, Franklin D. Roosevelt created the War Refugee Board. In her book, Ms. Erbelding produced a richly detailed, highly nuanced account of this little-known chapter in history. This remarkable work of historical reclamation, pieces together years of research and newly uncovered archival materials to tell the dramatic story of America’s little-known efforts to save the Jews of Europe.
