prenuptial agreement #poland

Frank Szmulowicz

Many marriage certificates from Poland in the 19th century (and also in the 20th century) state that

"Nowożeńcy umowy przedślubnej nie zawarli,"

which translates as "The newlyweds did not conclude a prenuptial agreement." The same stipulation can be found in Russian wedding certificates of the era. What did this mean in the condition of the times and what was its purpose?

Thank you.

Mostly, a marriage arrangement between the parents of the bride and the groom was concluded by a dowry agreement. The dowry was given by the bride's parents to the new couple, either money, goods or both.

Another JGener sent me a wedding certificate which contains an example of a prenuptial agreement. It concerns the property the newlyweds are bringing into the marriage, in particular, the dowry.
