This family photo is of Aron ZATULOVSKY and Malka DROBITSKY and their three children, the youngest born in 1909. What is a puzzle is the oldest female standing and holding a baby. She is not a known member of the family.

I am hoping someone might have an insight on who she might be. It has been suggested that she might be a nanny but would a nanny be in a formal family photo? She also appears in a large wedding photo taken a little later. Again, would a nanny be in such a photo? Also of interest is her very short hair. Style, typhus or another disease? It is also short in the later wedding photo.

I welcome any observations or insights please. Thank you.

She could be a nanny (or a photographer's assistant), probably the first.

Felissa,

Are there any census records that exist for their town at that time?  That may indicate if a nanny was living with them.

She could be a girl they hired, or she could be a relative that needed the work.  We really can only conjecture unless some record exists of the inhabitants of their home at that time.

Was the family well-to-do enough to keep a nanny?

About her hair, it is hard for me to tell if her hair is short, or just pulled back in a severe style.  Either way, it may be just personal style choice, or a specific reason, i.e. lice?

Good luck in your search,

Here is one possible scenario as found in my own family. My paternal grandfather died when my father was barely a year old. My grandmother remarried a widower who was the father of several teenage children. So perhaps the lady in question is the child from a first marriage of Aron or Malka.

As to the seemingly short hair. perhaps it is pulled back into a bun, then a style not uncommon.
