I read the name as Tzirel (not Tzidel) daughter of Avigdor.
Compare the other Reshes and Dalets on the stone.

Best of luck,

Almost definitely Tzirel not Tzidl. I know of several people named Celia who have Tzirel as their Hebrew/Yiddish name. So Tzirel bas Avigdor.

Hi. I initially thought that her name was tzirel but tzirel, a Yiddish name would be spelled צירעל. I personally never heard of the name צידיל, but I looked it up. That name does appear elsewhere.
I hope this helps.

  1. There are both "r" and "d" on the tombstone.
  2. The letter in the given name resmbles the "r" more that it does the "d"
  3. In Yiddish names, one really shouldn't assume different spelling - especially of the vowel sounds mean different names.  Written vowels are frequently based on how the name sounded.

Her Yiddish name may have sounded like Tsirl, Tsiril or Tsirel.  Same name, different pronunciation.

        1                                          2                               3

Only one of these is a "d"  ד the other two are   ר
The
ד was copied from the father's name.  One of the ר was copied from the given name, another from the word Reb.

It's up to you, Laura to decide which you find more convincing.
