Searching for additional information on Moses Wright #bessarabia #romania

Based on what I've found on ancestry.com, my great grandfather, Moses (or Morris) Wright,
  • was born about 1861 in Roumania (sic)
  • was married to Maria/Mary Schreibman in 1884
  • immigrated in 1895
  • lived in Omaha, Nebraska, according to the 1900 U. S. Federal Census
  • lived in Los Angeles, California according to the 1910 U. S. Federal Census
  • died 20 Apr 1922 in Los Angeles
I have been unable to find relevant passenger lists or naturalization data, nor has Find A Grave proved helpful. And, of course, I have no records antedating the 1900 census.

I do know that his wife appears to have been born 29 May 1865 in Bessarabia and died 05 July 1939 in Santa Monica, California.

Any suggestions about where I might next look would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Jay Frank

Jay,

There is a tree on Ancestry that lists Morris WRIGHT'S dad as David.  Assuming this is accurate, than the following info may be pertinent.

There is a George WRIGHT, born abt. 1864 in Galatz, Romania, and he lived in Omaha in 1900 and appears to have stayed in Omaha. George WRIGHT, on his passport application, lists his dad as David.

George's passport application has photos of both he and his wife Betty.

Perhaps Morris and George WRIGHT are brothers?

Hope this helps,

Sherri Bobish

You can find images of Moses and Mary Wright's death certificates on FamilySearch. Search here:

California, County Birth and Death Records, 1800-1994
https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/2001287

Both are buried at Beth Israel Cemetery in Los Angeles.

According to Moses's record, his parents were Israel David Wright and "Chai" (probably Chaya) Sarah, surname unknown. Mary's parents: "Nasonia Schriebman" and Sarah Samuels.

Also, consistent with Sherri Bobish's findings, which suggested a possible connection to Galatz, Romania... That's the birth place shown on the WWII draft card of Moses and Mary's oldest son, Jay (Jacob) Leon Wright.

So, thanks in large part to the help I've received here, there's been some breakthroughs.

First, the "Wright" surname was originally Reit. As you can see at https://forebears.io/surnames/reit, outside of the US it is found primarily in Germany and Romania.

Second, Mosche Reit (aka Moses Wright) and his wife, Marian, sailed from Bremen to New York on the Wittenkind, arriving on 8 April 1895. They would settle for a while in Omaha, Nebraska, and then, some time between 1900 and 1910 census, travel to Los Angeles County. Complicating the search was the fact that the name was listed as "Hosche Beit" rather than "Mosche Reit." Such is life!

Third, Mosche Reit (aka Moses Wright) did, indeed, have a brother named Getzel (George). Getzel and Bessy traveled from Hamburg to New York on the Italia, arriving 28 December 1899 with Omaha, Nebraska, as their final destination.

Finally, FindAGrave provides and inscription for George Wright which reads:  "Elyakim Getzel ben reb Yisrael David Wright - 13 Tamuz 5685." So we know that the father of Mosche and Getzel was Yisrael David Reit.

You folks have been fantastic. Thank you again.

Jay,

Congrats on finding that the original spelling of WRIGHT was REIT.  That should open up avenues of research for you.  Glad you updated all of us that were interested in your search.

Best regards,

Sherri Bobish
