Soviet Union genealogy #russia

Ozzy Bernstein

Hi,
Does anyone have any experience doing personal genealogical research on family from Soviet Union? I can't seem to locate any online resources to even get passed one generation. I have the names of a parent and 2 grandparents but no results in FamilySearch, Ancestry nor MyHeritage.

Thanks,
Ozzy Bernstein

Ozzy,
What timeframe are you looking for?  What city/region?
Some of the archives are making available metrical records from the early years of the Soviet Union - 1920s, later metrical records fall under the 75-year privacy rule, unless you can provide documentation with the direct family relationship (parents, grandparents, etc).  However, this might depend on the type of the documentation you are looking for and the time period.

Ozzy,

The question is too vague.  It may be more helpful if you indicated the last names and towns where they lived.  If you have first names and birth years, it may help narrow things down a little more, especially with common last names.

Try following WWII resources (all in Russian, of course):
