The Moroccan Jews of Cabo Verde - Preservation of Memory #events #sephardic
Many Sephardic Jewish families migrated to Cape Verde from Morocco and Gibraltar in the mid-19th century. Carol Castiel learned about this history while working at the Africa-America Institute. Many of her grantees came from Jewish families such as Levy, Benchimol, Wahnon, and Anahory. Inspired by her students to learn more about Cabo Verde’s connection to the Jewish world, Carol travelled there in the early 1990s and joined forces with Januário Nascimento (Auday family of Tangier) who was pressing for the restoration and preservation of the country’s small Sephardic burial grounds. The Cape Verde Jewish Heritage Project was established in 2007 to honor the memory and document the contributions of the Sephardic Jews of Cabo Verde.
