Robin Schwartz
Does anyone have leads for researching families from Turkey/Bulgaria, Salonika, and/or Sabbatean Jews.
Thanks Robin

Robin, Have you checked if www.familysearch.org has vital or other types of records from those regions? Regards, Sherri Bobish

Why not use the correct name of Thessaloniki? It might help.

Under Ottoman rule the city was Saloniki. Do you mean that researchers should make sure to check that name too?
Robin, Your request for information is confusing. Do you mean the Sabbateans who lived in the Ottoman empire or modern Turkey or do you want include other places? Until after WWI, Salonika/Saloniki was part of the Ottoman empire but it was transferred to Greece. The Jewish community was wiped out by the Nazis. You might also want to contact Kehila Kadosha Janina in New York which is the only synagogue founded by Greek Jews (Romaniote) in the US. T There was just a wonderful film festival about Greek Jews from LA Greek film Festival. You might get some leads from this link: https://www.athensinsider.com/an-international-film-festival-to-spotlight-greeces-jewish-heritage Jessica Schein

I have been transcribing intake cards for many Jews from Saloniki as part of the Arolsen Archives effort through Zooniverse. I've probably done 100 from there already, so I also suggest asking Arolsen Archives to check WW2 records if your interest extends that far.
