Where is/was Litosky, Poland? #belarus #poland
Steven Usdansky
My grandmother's sister, Baska, or Bashe, maiden name Sinienska, was the only sister not to emigrate to the US. Contact with Baska was lost after the start of WWII, and it is assumed she perished in the Shoah. I'm looking for information I can find regarding Baska and any family she might have had in Europe. Right now all I have is her name and the following:
On Jan 14, 1937, Baska's sister, Malka, returned from a trip to Europe. Malka listed "sister: Baska-Litosky,Poland" as her nearest relative back in the old country. Places associated with Baska's siblings and her paternal aunts and uncles cluster in a triangle formed by Lyubcha, Navahrudak, and Karelichy. My very first question, to which I don't have a good answer, is, "where is Litosky?" Thanks for any suggestions -- Steven Usdansky usdanskys@... It must be Brest (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brest,_Belarus) which was called Brest-Litovsk before the WWI, and which belonged to Poland between the two World Wars.

Michael Moz: Brest was my first thought; Lida was my second thought. Those thoughts are tempered by my experience trying to find the place one of my grandmother's cousins claimed to be from. At first I thought I'd found the town, about 50 mi (if I recall correctly) SW of Navahrudak. Turns out there was a farm about a mile away from the farm where that cousin's siblings were from with the same name. As I was writing the above paragraph, I pulled up a map of Belarus to try to recall the name of the town and farm. I didn't find it (but it's in my files, somewhere). However, what I noticed on the map was a place I hadn't noticed before; Litovka (Літоўка). It's just 5 km north of Navahrudak. I now have a new #1 candidate. Thanks for the inspiration! -- Steven Usdansky usdanskys@...
