Where to find Illinois Northern District Naturalization Records? #records

David Levine

Hi
I found the index record for a relative's naturalization in the Illinois Northern District Naturalization Index at Family Search
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33SQ-GPQQ-CLBW?i=2471&personaUrl=%2Fark%3A%2F61903%2F1%3A1%3AXKPC-XQ6
However I do not see a place online to find the full record on the FamilySearch wiki or German Roots site:
https://www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/United_States_Naturalization_and_Citizenship#Finding_Naturalization_Records
https://www.germanroots.com/illinoisnat.html
Is this something I have to order from the National Archives?
thanks
David

Hi David,

The card indicates the naturalization took place in the/a "municipal court" in Milwaukee (presumably Wisconsin) on March 16, 1906.  Looks like it is petition # 9024 in volume 15, page 31 of that court's naturalization records.

That is not a Federal court, so will not be at the National Archives.  You'll need to track down the records of that court.  The FamilySearch wiki says this:
The Milwaukee circuit and municipal court records of 1836 to 1941 are at:
Milwaukee County Historical Society
910 North World 3rd Street
Milwaukee, WI 53203-1591
Telephone: 414-273-8288
Fax: 414-273-3268
Website: http://www.milwaukeehistory.net

At least that is a place to start.  Good luck,

Marian Smith

The card was found in the NE Illinois index.  Could Milwaukee refer to the avenue in Chicago and not the city?

I suppose it could just be a street in Chicago.  But every version of this card I find online all come back to the same source, Soundex Index to Naturalization Petitions for the United States District and Circuit Courts, Northern District of Illinois and Immigration and Naturalization Service District 9, 1840-1950.. Microfilm Publication: M1285. NAID: 1160705. Records of the Immigration and Naturalization Service, 1787 - 2004, Record Group 85. National Archives at Chicago, Chicago, Illinois.

That index was created by the INS Chicago District, which for many years included 40+ counties in Wisconsin.  Note it comes from Record Group 85. NARA gave it the current title because they saw it only as a reference to court records.  You can find NARA's microfilm publication pamphlet for it here

David,

For Milwaukee naturalizations try:
https://milwaukeehistory.net/unlocking-the-vault/naturalization-papers-text/

"The time period of Milwaukee County naturalization records are from 1836 to May 1941"

There is a form to request a search for the record (it is not free.)
https://milwaukeehistory.net/research/research-services-requests/naturalization-requests/

Good luck in your search,

Sherri Bobish
