Where Was Wilkennie, Russia? #russia #names

I found my grandmother's brother's 1911 naturalization papers (online), and attached them. He put down that he was born in Wilkennie, Russia. I have never heard of it, and couldn't find it in a search. Any ideas? Thanks.

In Lithuania there is the town Vilkiya. some 20 km N to Kovno (you have this town in your list as well)
My dear wife is from Kovno. she tells "vilkas" is the Lythuanian (and Belarussian вилк) for wolf. There are Vilyaka, Vilkishkaj.

Noticing that family Edelson has some roots in Kovno I have to assume that some transliteration went wrong and that the place of birth/abode was WILKOMIR [ Ukmerge] which is not far from Kovno and is part of Kovno Gubernia

If you look at his NY ship arrival on the Hamburg in 1904 it says he is from Kovno.  (He is Meier Edelson, glazier, age 18)
If you look at the Hamburg departure lists, he is Meier Edelson from Wilkomir.
Kovno is both a city and a Gubernia.  Like Kansas City is in Kansas State.

I can confirm the information given by others since I recently looked up this JewishGen entry. For reasons I do not understand, my grandfather Jack Cooke (Kruk) and his brother Max helped found the Northend Wilkomir Society (a burial society) in the 1920s referring to the north-end of Montreal where the main Jewish cemetery was located.  They were both born in Warsaw, Poland, so I cannot establish their connection to Wilkomir unless some earlier generation came from there.

Thanks. I'm still learning. Were you able to connect Isaac to Meier by age and occupation, or is there something in the name Meier also? Thanks again.

I searched using only the last name, the ship, and the arrival month.  Was surprised to see Meier matching the age and the occupation.
