A followup to Re: Seeking a family tree program (jewishgen.org):
Could the people who responded please add info about their recommended programs capacities for the the following: The ability to handle Hebrew texts with the correct left to right orientation when inserting data The ability to register dates in the Jewish calendar The ability to create reports in Hebrew The ability to import for gedcoms that have Hebrew names and dates. Thank you -- Odeda Zlotnick Jerusalem, Israel. |

DoroTree is a genealogy program that was developed specifically for Jewish family researchers. It accepts entries in many languages, Hebrew included, accepts Jewish/Hebrew dates and has room for special Jewish-related items, such as Yahrzeit dates etc. It can take Gedcom files created by other programs.
Check www.dorotree.com I purchased the program about 20 years ago but decided it wasn't the right program for me. I recently checked their website and there hasn't been much change and the version offered only went up from version 2 to version 3, so I don't know how active the company is at this point. I have used DoroTree - see the comments below, but replaced it with an English only program, reporting transliterated Hebrew dates in the description field (not the date field). Doro Tree felt like an old DOS program in the era of Windows. I kept it until it really did not work on Windows 10. Unfortunately the program was created by one person - who did a masterful job, but had to spend his time trying to keep it running under the various operating systems that there was no time to make upgrades to the program's capabilities. The other option is My Heritage Family Tree Builder - but here it is only Hebrew or only French or only English. And you really need a MyHeritage subscription if you have more than 250 people, because it wants to sync with your tree on their site.

I think "myheritage" are champions in Hebrew and in many languages.

Until last year I used GenoPro that fully supports Hebrew and is very friendly. I still use it but now I switch to Family Tree Builder of MyHeritage using it offline. Its optional charts may display bilingual data that you have to choose: main language and secondary language.

Thank you to all those who answered about programs that do have those features.

My followup question came because some recommendations on the other thread Re: Seeking a family tree program (jewishgen.org) were made without mentioning the possiblity of using Hebrew names and Jewish dates - and I thought that the existence of the feature, or lack of it should be mentioned when the question comes up on JewishGen. On Wed, Mar 1, 2023 at 04:25 PM, Sarah L Meyer wrote: The other option is My Heritage Family Tree Builder - but here it is only Hebrew or only French or only English. But you can say no,and create as large a tree as you want on your own computer. Just be careful in replying, because "do not show this again" means "just sync without asking me. Whereas if you don't want a sync, you have to reply to the question every time you want to load on your local tree. You can even create a local tree that doesn't exist on their site at all. Annoying, yes. Deal breaker? That depends on a person's other preferences. I have been using My Heritage's Family Tree Builder for many years to create trees on my own computer - and saying "no" to the sync when I wasn't a member - or when those were trees I simply did not want to have synched at all. My Heritage converts dates from the standard calendar to the Jewish calendar - no matter what language you enter the date in - an you can choose which date to view. Sometimes a Jewish date for birth or death can give you additional info about your family (e.g. "my mom said my Brith was on the Shabbes after Pessach" can let you pinpoint the vague year in which the person was born. BC (Before Corona) I did manage to install DoroTree on Windows 10 for a person who needed it badly. It took some contortions, and an email to the support person of DoroTree - but I agree with what others said about its present limitations, and it's not something I would recommend, -- Odeda Zlotnick Jerusalem, Israel. |

If you want both Hebrew and another language simultaneously, your only choice is DoroTree and as I said, it did not run for me in Windows 10. If you would be satisfied with Hebrew only - look at Family Tree Builder by MyHeritage (But that means keeping a MH subscription) - and I don't think either of these programs run on a Mac. MyHeritage Hebrew version should do Hebrew reports. and import a Gedcom with Hebrew. DoroTree also (If it runs) would import a Gedcom with Hebrew. And I don't know how long there will be support for DoroTree - it seemed to me that the creator of the program is not young. Perhaps he will sell the program and then it would continue. You will need to research it.
Otherwise you will end up with a general genealogy program such as Legacy Family Tree, Roots Magic or Family Tree maker. (Both of the later two will sync with Ancestry and have both PC and Mac versions). Legacy is PC only. You can always add transliterated Hebrew (or add the Hebrew name in Hebrew as a picture to the media) and add Jewish calendar dates (for Legacy as a description)- there is talk of eventually recognizing Jewish dates in the date field. None of these programs will write any Hebrew report or be able to read a Gedcom with Hebrew information. You might be able to use My Heritage's family tree builder as an intermediary program to read the Gedcom which included Hebrew and to produce one for a general program that would be all in the secular language of your choice. -- Sarah L Meyer Georgetown TX ANK(I)ER, BIGOS, KARMELEK, PERLSTADT, STOKFISZ, SZPIL(T)BAUM, Poland BIRGARDOVSKY, EDELBERG, HITE (CHAIT), PERCHIK Russia (southern Ukraine) and some Latvia or Lithuania https://www.sarahsgenies.com |

Hi Odeda, The only software that will allow you to properly use Hebrew letters and dates, and convert from one to another is the free program Family Tree Builder (https://www.myheritage.com/ftb) from MyHeritage. Best regards
