Wolk family of Lithuania #lithuania

David Wolk

My great grandparents were Leba and Max Wolk (the latter may have also been known as Shmuel).  Leba's maiden name was Broskey and she was born approx. 1846, possibly in eastern Germany.  Max/Shmuel's details are largely unknown other than he and Leba lived, at one stage, in or near Petkunai, Lithuania.  He may also have lived in Krakinovo.  They had six children, all of whom - save possibly one daughter - had immigrated to the U.S. and South Africa by about 1905.  Leba also left Lithuania around 1905 and sailed to the U.S. where she lived variously in Mass., New Hampshire and lastly New York where she died.  She is buried in a Hudson, N.Y. cemetery next to other Broskey family members.  I can only assume Max died in Lithuania prior to Leba's immigration.  Is it possible anyone on JewishGen has any information on Max or his branch of the Wolk family in Lithuania?  It would be greatly welcomed.

David try searching the LitvakSIG All Lithuania Database ALD. you would find a number of WOLK family information from Petkunai.
Also if you search family name WOLK on the JewishGen Family Finder and add Lithuania as the country, you will find 50+ entires.
Good luck with your quest.

Carol Hoffman,

Thanks for your response re. suggested resources.  Have tried the LitvakSIG and the JewishGen Family Finder.  No matter how I spell the family name, town or country, the result is the same - zero.  Any thoughts?

Have you tried different spellings? About 20 years ago I worked with a Carol Volk from London. Volk is quite a common Jewish name in London. In the Polish-Lithuanian lands in the 19th century, they used the Polish language where there was a W but no V. But when such families migrated westwards the W became V.

This happened in my father's family where Serwianski became Serviansky (US), Servian (UK), Server (UK) and Sirvan (US) in UK and US.
