Zhitomir #ukraine

My maternal grandmother Lejke Feldman arrived at Ellis Island aboard the SS George Washington on January 27, 1914. Most of her life was lived in Pittsburgh as LENA COHEN and Zhitomir was treated almost as a fairy tale location. Unfortunately I know nothing of the fate of the JACOB FELDMAN family following her emigration.  Is it now too late?

Alex Krakovsky has posted index listings for Zhitomir metric records which cover up to 1920 for deaths births and marriages.   You can access this at https://uk.wikisource.org/wiki/%D0%90%D1%80%D1%85%D1%96%D0%B2%D0%B8/%D0%94%D0%90%D0%96%D0%9E/67/3
Use google chrome which will translate the descriptions only into English
Scroll all the way to the bottom and you will find these links.

Unfortunately the actual records are in cursive Cyrillic - but you can actually do a search for these - I found my GGP marriage records in Zhitomir from 1882 without being able to read Russian - See my attached slide for instructions how to do this.

Howard,

There are several avenues of research, one is to search The Ellis Island Database:
https://stevemorse.org/ellis2/ellisgold.html

Put FELDMAN in the surname field, and put the letter "Z" in the town field.

The search will come up with many FELDMAN(N)s coming from Zhitomer (town spelled varioius ways)

Look at each manifest and see who they were going to (on earlier one-page manifests) and on the later two-page manifests, both who they were going to and who they left behind.  This may give you crucial data.

Hope this helps,
