ZOOM event: Sephardic Jews in Consular and Diplomatic Archives #sephardic #events
David Mendoza
This meeting will also be of interest to those researching Ashkenezi,
Musta'arabi and other Jewish ancestries. Throughout history, Sephardic Jews interacted with foreign diplomats for political, business or personal reasons. These interactions have left oceans of written records in diplomatic archives worldwide. What types of records exist, where can they be found, which ones will yield the most valuable information, and what historical or genealogical insights can we gain from them? The talk will feature lessons learned from exploiting diplomatic archives in France, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, multiple illustrative examples, and an overview of archives begging to be researched. Thierry Samama has been researching his Tunisian ancestors since 2010. Faced with the lack of accessible local records in Tunisia, he has pioneered the exploitation of French Diplomatic Archives for Jewish Tunisian genealogical purposes, and recruited and led a 25-people team with Cercle de Généalogie Juive to index consular records and publish the resulting databases. He is the author of several articles on the topic, and the co-author of a book on Jews enjoying French consular protection in Tunisia. He is currently extending this work to diplomatic archives in the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. The meeting is on Sunday 24 January 2021 at 11am LA, 2pm NYC, 7pm London, 8pm Amsterdam and 9pm Jerusalem.
